Tips for Eating on the Road
Since I’ll be traveling for the next 5 days, I’ve been thinking about eating on the go. Like I’ve said before, I have no problems eating fast food on occasion. In fact usually the only time I have it is on a road trip. But since I’ve already had Chick-fil-a twice this week, I’m a little fast food-ed out. Instead I packed a bag full of healthy snacks- turkey and spinach sandwiches, apples, pretzels, and bottles of water.
It got me thinking of some other travel-eating strategies:
Plan ahead. Probably the most important. Know what your options are ahead of time. Maybe you pass on a grocery store with a good salad bar, or maybe it’s easier to pack a meal instead.
Choose wisely. Not all fast food is bad. Subway has great options- I usually have a veggie or turkey sub on whole grain bread then load of on the veggies. Many fast food establishments have been adding healthier items to the menu. Go for grilled options instead of breaded. Perhaps skip the fries- some places offer other side options like fruit cups or side salads.
Don’t beat yourself up. So what if you don’t make the best choices at every meal. It’s all about what you do over time. Take advantage of the healthy options when you have them. Stop at a grocery store to stock up on things you might be missing out on by eating out- fruit is a good portable option, or high fiber granola bars.
